They come in neutral colors and simple, sophisticated shapes. With a classic handbag, you can afford to splurge because you will be able to carry it year after year. So, which designer bags are classics? Certainly it depends on your own personal preferences, but here are a few classics that anyone would love. Often called the 2.55 purse, the flap bag is available in lambskin or caviar leather in a variety of colors. For a while, the flap bag was "out" for the younger set. But it has seen a resurgence in recent years when it gained popularity among celebrities such as Ashley Olsen and Lindsay Lohan, among others. The wait list for a Birkin is supposedly two years. You will see the Birkin on the arm of many celebrities, both on and off the screen. It has been featured in Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls, The Sopranos, Gossip Girl and a variety of other television shows and movies. Balenciaga Cherche Midi Courtesy of Balenciaga Balenciaga offers a variety of bags in classic shapes and styles. One of my favorites is the Cherche Midi in white goatskin. This bag features a flap front pocket and roomy interior. Though smaller than some of the other popular Balenciaga bags, it's still big enough to hold all your essentials at 10 inches wide. Balenciaga bags are definitely a splurge at nearly $3,000. Louis Vuitton Speedy Courtesy of eLuxury This luxurious bag features monogrammed canvas with goldtone hardware. Its roomy style and classic shape make it a top choice in bags. This iconic handbag is the perfect option if you are looking for a classic everyday bag. This bag is priced around $700 from eLuxury and other retailers. Coach Lindsay Vintage Shopper Courtesy of Nordstrom Coach is another line that offers a variety of bags that can be considered classics. They use top quality leather to create very elegant, sophisticated styles. Though in recent years Coach has added more funky and fun bags to their collections, they still offer their classic choices. The Lindsay vintage shopper will be a mainstay for years. Dooney & Bourke Chiara Courtesy of Nordstrom If you want to add a patent leather bag to your classic collection, the Dooney & Bourke Chiara is a great choice. This drawstring bag comes in pebbled, croc-embossed and smooth leather too. However, the mink patent leather version is a beautiful option. An affordable classic, it's priced under $300 from Nordstrom.
