Oscar de la Renta Biography:

Born Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo on July 22, 1932, Oscar de la Renta left his native Dominican Republic at the age of 18 to pursue the study of painting in Spain. While studying at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, del la Renta began to take an interest in sketching instead of just painting and soon began to get notice from top fashion houses. This lead to an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga, famous for their couture pieces.

Oscar de la Renta Label:

After a short time with Balenciaga, de la Renta moved to Paris as an apprentice for Lanvin. He then took a hop across the Atlantic to New York, where he worked for Elizabeth Arden for two years. In 1965, he released his first ready-to-wear collection.

Oscar de la Renta Commerical Success:

In 1967, just two years after he launched his line, de la Renta married Françoise de Langlade, who used to work as editor-in-chief of French Vogue. The new Mrs. de la Renta became a famous hostess and was said to have used her considerable connections from Vogue to help get people interested in her new husband's designs. Though she never became a part of the company, she was instrumental in his early success, helping him become the fashion force he is today.

Oscar de la Renta Collections:

For the first 30 years of the de la Rental label, the designer stuck primarily to women's fashion. It wasn't until 2001 that he began to branch out into accessories. Today, he has the Pink label, a sportswear label (Oscar by Oscar de la Renta) and though he doesn't design menswear himself, he approves a line with his name on it for males. In some parts of the world, there is also a sportswear line for men and boys called Oscar Jeans. Not yet content, de la Renta began selling lingerie, furniture, home fragrances, luggage and even furs.
