Definition: A fez is a hat that is the shape of an abridged cone and is most commonly red. The hat is also usually made of felt and doesn’t have a brim.
Dating back to the Ottoman Empire, the fez hat has Greek origins. While it isn’t worn much anymore, it does have a history of use in certain religions, governments and militaries. Today, it’s found predominantly in the eastern hemisphere in locations such as Southern Asia. In America, the Shriners traditionally wear a red fez.
